Avening in the First World War:
As in every community in 1918 there was a huge celebration for the end of the ‘war that would end
all wars’. In this 100th annivesary of that memorable time, we are remembering the fallen, and
celebrating the end of the war by putting on a number of events.
The village lost 42 men overall, the first in November 1914 and the last “of wounds” in 1923. These
are recorded on our Roll of Honour (full details are on our History pages).
We know very little of the other Villagers who were involved and were fortunate enough to return
unscathed nor do we know how many were wounded, either severely and “walking”.
That latter number must have been at least 100. The hunt is one for those names and if our
anniversary events trigger memories of Avening’s wounded, please let us know.
